1- If you do not customize any things for your site (in Parent theme), you can update whole the theme to the latest version

It's kind of Custom post type. Normally, the default post type just allows you to add title, article, post image, or attachment, ....
In some cases if you need an extend post type to add more infos, so you should customize and it's called Portfolio
