trouble with updating header layout

I'm working on a site that was built by someone else using the Boutique theme. I'm trying to change the header layout but the site isn't updating when I change the header format in the dashboard. Its set up with a child theme but there's no child theme header file. Any idea why the header isn't updating? Is there another location that I'm not finding to edit the header?
