Change amount of columns on list collection page

Hi,
The list collection page displays all the collections in a large image and a 2 column format which is not very user friendly / appealing way and takes up a large amount of space. I would like to change it to a 3 or 4 column format like you can in other themes but i cannot find and settings and have scrolled through the code but i have little-no programming exp. can you please help?
Even a short code to put a collections list on the main page would be very helpful.
