I am using a boutique theme and I like this side bar menu for categories but how do you get rid of the figure of the man in the background to blank black colour or even change the image to one of your own?

You can try the method below. Hope it useful for you.
Please enter the Dashboard, choose Theme Options>> Custom JS/CSS and add these codes. Do not forget click on SAVE button, reload your page and let us know your result. (see the attachment screenshot)
